Deepinder Goyal is the founder, managing director, and CEO of Zomato which is a multinational restaurant aggregator and food delivery company.

He comes from a middle-class humble background, but unlike me, he is a super genius and is a pass out of IIT-Delhi.

Deepinder hails from Muktsar, Punjab, he completed his schooling in Punjab and then cracked IIT-delhi where he met his first wife Kanchan Joshi but divorced after a few years.

Now let’s dive into the story of his success and how he started Zomato.

How Deepinder Goyal Started Zomato

The journey of Deepinder Goyal’s Zomato started in 2008 as an idea. He and his co-founder Pankaj Chaddah were working at Bain & Company when an idea struck in their mind.

They thought of making a platform where people can easily order their food and get it delivered to their doorstep from their favorite restaurant.

They started with the name ‘Foodiesbay’ and then there was no looking back. They started attracting funding time and again as the idea was interesting.

They changed the name from ‘Foodiebay’ to Zomato and it grew many-fold after getting funding from investors across the globe.

The company grew well under the leadership of Deepinder and in 2018, the company got the title of a unicorn.

Zomato was burning and it was in 2023-24, when the company posted a profit of ₹341 crores. Later, it acquired Blinkit and now both the companies are running successfully. Although Blinkit is still burning but is expected to be in profit in the year 2025.
